NEW YORK — Drug stores continue to solidify their reputations as health care destinations, and the trend toward mineral makeup fits in perfectly with that positioning. Although mineral makeup has been used for ages to add color and beauty to the face, the latest wave of such products has a particularly strong health component. Mineral makeup is based on hypoallergenic loose powder, contains no alcohol, perfumes, dyes or preservatives, and naturally nourishes the skin.
The health and beauty market encompasses a wide variety of sectors and for the purposes of this research incorporates haircare, oral care, shaving products, deodorants and body sprays, and personal washing items. The categories, together, are worth more than 2.2bn [pounds sterling] annually. The second largest category was deodorants and body sprays, and once again they all performed well with deodorants and male body sprays rising 8% each, while female body sprays rose 3%. The best performer was Lynx male body spray worth 50m [pounds sterling] and rising 11%. To put this figure into perspective, the second player in this sector was Addiction at 3m [pounds sterling]. Sure Body Responsive was the leading deodorant brand at 47m [pounds sterling], up 30%. Right Guard followed at 29m [pounds sterling]. Female body sprays were led by impulse at 23m [pounds sterling], and up 10% this year.

The What It Takes television spot focuses on how it takes a person with truly special and unique qualities — from patience and dedication to a sense of humor — to handle the day-to-day challenges of running a small business. Recognizing small business owners are stretched for time and lack the resources of large corporations, the MasterCard ad captures real-life small business moments such as working odd hours and dealing with faulty office equipment. A corresponding print ad is slated to break later this summer in publications such as Fortune, New York Times Magazine, TIME and The Wall Street Journal. WASHINGTON — The housing market is still booming, with construction of new homes rising 0.2 percent in May. Builders rushed to break ground on new projects to meet strong demand fueled by low mortgage rates. While the May increase was slightly below the 0.6 percent gain that had been forecast, economists blamed a decline in the South on the temporary effect of unusually wet weather in Florida and other parts of the South. They noted that permits for new construction, a key indicator of future strength, came in at a solid annual rate of 2.050 million units. “We still have a red-hot housing market,” said David Seiders, chief economist of the National Association of Home Builders. “Surveys of both lenders and builders are showing tremendous ongoing strength with little or no hints that anything is starting to fall.”
The number of new single-family homes under construction in El Paso County fell for the second straight month in February, but industry officials arent fretting yet. Construction began last month on 584 single-family homes - down 12 percent from the 664 homes started in February 1999. Combined with Januarys figures, which also declined from the previous year, single-family housing starts for the first two months of 2000 in the county were down 11.5 percent over the same period in 1999.

IT STARTED as a small dress shop and a gun store in a Stockholm suburb, inspired by cheap post-war American fashion. Almost 50 years later, the fashion company HM is poised to overtake Marks Spencer as Europes largest clothing retailer. It is all a far cry from 1947 when a humble salesman called Erling Persson went to America and was impressed by the low-cost clothing stores he saw there. He returned to Sweden and opened a shop called Hennes (meaning “hers” in Swedish) in the Stockholm suburb, with the slogan “fashion and quality at the best price”. The company grew slowly through the 1960s and opened its first store in Britain in 1978. It had a reputation for providing good, cheap, if slightly unadventurous, high street fashion. But in 1998, Mr Persson handed control of the company over to his son Stefan, and suddenly the profile of HM began to rise through word of mouth and increased mentions on the fashion pages of glossy magazines.
Byline: HILARIE STELFOX THE AVERAGE western woman probably has more clothes in her wardrobe today than at any time in the past. In fact, its often stated that most of us wear only a small percentage of the clothes we own; a fact that never deters us from buying more. Our financial losses, however, are gains for the huge number of charity shops that have sprung up in the last couple of decades.

The $1 million campaign from TBWA/Chiat/Day, Los Angeles, connotes celebrity status for the upscale Samsonite 735 Series, an assortment of tote, commuter, garment and wheeled bags that accommodate laptop computers, suits and other necessities for business trips. The Nadia Comaneci 735 ad shows the Olympic gymnast, arms only, doing a handstand on top of a totebag as copy states that the bag can expand to provide enough room for a medal or two. The James Bond 735 execution, sporting a bowtie on the handle and a womans arms embracing it across the front, says the ballistic nylon skin is akin to a bulletproof vest. Basketball star Lisa Leslies tote bag has a handle that rises to the top of the page while a Japanese gong dangles from the handle of sushi chef Nobus 735. The ads run October through December in The Wall Street Journal, in-flight magazines and lifestyle books like GQ, Food Wine and Travel Leisure. The luggage maker has landed a role for a 735 and a briefcase in The World is Not Enough, due Nov. 19 with Pierce Brosnan in the Bond role (Brandweek, July 19). Cross marketing includes luggage and travel sweeps. Samsonite also will place signs on New York City buses when the movie breaks to further the tie to 007. Along the lines of marketing itself as a travel brand as well as a platform that destinations can use to carry their message, Samsonite partners with Californias statehood celebration next year. Creating a power merchandising approach to apparel in the new Kmart prototype was facilitated by the strong working partnerships that the retailer had forged with its suppliers. According to senior vice president Don Keeble, Kmarts suppliers had a hand in the specialty-store-type apparel presentation that sets the Auburn Hills, Mich., prototype apart from other discount operations. Keeble described the new lingerie department at Auburn Hills as a “perfect example” of that partnership in action. “We went out and talked to several companies we do a lot of business with, magnificent makers, and from their input we were able to come up with what we think is one of the best presentations in lingerie in mass merchandisers.”

The National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL) has issued its March Printing Business Conditions Report, with all indicators signaling that the recession is over for print. The report cautions, however, that the pace of the recovery will be slowed until corporate profits and the ad budgets they support strengthen late in 2002. It also points out that given the way the printing industry is changing, not everyone will share in the recovery–even when it hits full speed. NAPLs Printing Business Conditions Special Update includes information on printing industry sales and profitability, as well as macroeconomic data for the national economy. The update is published six times a year by NAPLs Printing Economic Research Center. The NAPL Printing Business Index (PBI), the associations comprehensive measure of printing industry activity, rose to 53.0 in March, up from 49.6 in February and 39.9 in January, marking the fifth consecutive month the number has risen and the first time since October 2000 that it stands above 50. A PBI reading above 50 signifies that more printers report business is picking up than report business is slowing down. Conversely, an index reading below 50 indicates the opposite position. The PBI is a measure of printing activity that includes critical factors such as current business conditions, expected future business conditions (confidence), work-on-hand, hiring plans and pretax profitability. How much an individual company participates in the upturn ahead will clearly depend on the client mix, and even more on how well the company prepares for the structural change that is redefining our industry, said NAPL vice president and chief economist Andrew Paparozzi. Our markets are changing. So are the kinds of services our clients expect, how we produce and deliver those services and our competition. Thats why, as weve emphasized all along, this wasnt just another recession–and this isnt just another recovery. We are a growth industry, and growth will accelerate considerably over the next 18 months. But this time, a rising tide isnt going to lift all boats.
For the past several years printing technology has been radically changing the printing industry, and while many printing companies are reluctant to invest in new, state-of-the-art equipment and software out of concern for their return on investment, Print Tech believes it is essential. Print Tech has always considered itself a leader in the quick printing area, and to grow within that arena the company understands that it must evolve within the industry. With that understanding, Print Tech is now offering its customers PrintFLEX(TM), a Web-to-print document customization technology. Print Tech has been working on this technology for the past two years and invested millions to bring its clients to the cutting edge of customized business and marketing communications. “Print Tech has developed PrintFLEX(TM), a technology that will set the benchmark for all print marketing customization, or as we like to say variable data printing on steroids,” says Russell Evans, CEO. “With traditional print, direct marketing returns of .5% to 2% are the norm. PrintFLEX(TM) customization, however, has proven results 10 times the norm and has seen response rates of over 20%. Its about helping our customers market and communicate more successfully to their current and potential clients.”

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

OAKLAND — Yusuf Beys preliminary hearing on sex crime charges was postponed Monday to give his lawyer time to back her claim that the black Muslim leader is too ill for legal proceedings to continue. Alameda County Superior Court Judge Larry Goodman told Beys attorney, Lorna P. Brown, to return to his court April 2 with medical records and the doctor who diagnosed Beys condition. Brown has contended that a cancer has spread in Beys body and that his condition leaves him unable to assist in his defense against the 27 felony sex crime counts filed by Deputy District Attorney Teresa Ortega.
Colorado has locked up more than 800 sex offenders since 1998 under a tough law that potentially makes them inmates for life. Seven years after the General Assembly passed the Colorado Sex Offender Lifetime Supervision Act, prosecutors and victim-rights groups say the law is working fine. Supporters say lifetime supervision makes Colorado safer and motivates offenders to get treatment.

Where else will you find Horsin Around, Americas only carousel carving school? A buck per person buys you and your kids way more smiles than the $29-per-person admission ticket to yet another theme park, every single experience in which (save for the temper tantrums thrown by kids jacked up on sugar, noise and whirling rides) will be forgotten within a day. Instead, Horsin Around lets you watch proud tigers, prancing horses and squat frogs slowly come to life in an air of hand-carved magic and calm and smiles creasing the faces of the amateur carvers who are realizing a lifetimes fantasy. Where else, too, will you find the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum, which displays tow trucks and wreckers dating back to 1916? And where else will you find a Victorian-era train station, whose design won first prize in the 1900 architectural competition of the Beaux Arts Institute in Paris and whose terminal now serves in all its unaltered glory as a hotel lobby, with steam-engine-era sleeping cars (complete with updated amenities) serving as bedrooms and a former dining car serving as a restaurant? Is this what bandleader Benny Goodman had in mind when he conjured up Chattanooga Choo Choo and helped kick off the era of swing?
Chattanooga: HistoryThe Chickamaugas, a splinter group of the Cherokee tribe, moved to the South Chickamauga Creek villages in 1777. They resisted white settlement and cooperated with the British during the American Revolution. Frontiersmen destroyed the Chickamauga villages in 1779. Three years later, on the slope of Lookout Mountain, the Native Americans engaged the frontiersmen who had destroyed their villages. This confrontation has become known as the last battle of the American Revolution. In 1785, the United States government took control of Native American affairs.Tennessee became the sixteenth state in 1796. At that time Native American lands made up about three-fourths of the region, including the Chattanooga area. Rosss Landing was established in 1816 as a trading post on the banks of the Tennessee River by Chief John Ross, leader of the Cherokee nation. Chattanooga became a center of education and culture for the Native Americans when the Brainerd Mission was created in 1817. Hamilton County was established in 1819 on land north of the Tennessee River. With the Cherokee removal in 1838, the county expanded south of the river to encompass Rosss Landing.

Asda and Tesco could be set to go head-to-head again as both consider launching a network of tradesmen to cash in on consumers fears over cowboy workmen. The service would include a directory of maintenance services, such as plumbers and electricians, which would be guaranteed by the supermarkets, removing the worry of bad workmanship and rip-off merchants. Asda financial services director Gev Lynott told The Grocer that it had been looking at what such a service would entail, as one of the key problems for new homeowners was trying to find good tradesmen. It would be great if Asda could set up this sort of network. Wed need to make sure the people we used always did a good job, so it would be tricky But why not?

There will be a huge impact on the area most heavily utilised by the wildlife,” she said. “We have to be very careful how we plan for the future. If landscape planning in Samburu is not managed it will have an adverse effect on the environment and the people who rely on tourism for their livelihoods.” Save the Elephants had been threatened with expulsion from Samburu, where the group carries out conservation work protecting the regions 5,500 elephants, at the end of April. The group was given until tomorrow to leave the reserve after being accused by Samburu County Council of “publishing malicious reports”. But the charity earned a last-minute reprieved after local councillors committed to protecting the reserve managed to overturn the order. Councillor Christopher Lalkalepi said Save the Elephants was now “in safe hands. They will not be chased away.”

Fellow travellers were woken by the sound of the elephant and later discovered his body outside the secure compound of the Sopa safari lodge.
sydney eyelid surgery
October 6th, 2008
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLO. — An evidence-based approach is always best for managing and treating skin cancers, and eyelid tumors are no exception, Dr. Harry Sharata said at the annual meeting of the American Society for Mobs Surgery. The choice of Mohs surgery for nonmelanoma eyelid tumors is supported by evidence in the literature, Dr. Sharata said. A review article that examined 110 papers published between 1966 and 1999 justified that conclusion (Ophthalmology 108[11]:2088-98, 2001). Dr. Sharatas patient was an 86-year-old man with a number of health problems. His tumor, an infiltrative basal cell carcinoma (BCC) that had existed for 2-3 years, was located on the lower eyelid of his only seeing eye. He had a glass eye in the other socket. The man also was taking warfarin for a previous stroke.
THE number of people having antiageing plastic surgery increased dramatically in 2005. Figures to be published tomorrow by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) show that 2279 patients had face or neck lifts in 2005, up 42.1-per cent on 2004. There was a 50.2-per cent increase in the number having eyelid surgery - some 3415 patients - and a 34.8-per cent increase in the number of people having brow lifts, a total of 580 patients. Eyelid surgery is the second most popular procedure after breast augmentation.

AbstractKey words: Reservation gaming, land tenure, wealth acquisition, tribal entrepreneurial activity, entrepreneurial adaptationThe Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 (IGRA) was inspired by a desire to increase tribal employment and educational opportunities, thus reducing the chronic poverty of reservations while maintaining a degree of tribal self-governance. Research indicates some short-term benefits. Reservations with casino gaming have increased tribal employment, reduced tribal welfare rolls, increased childrens educational levels (Vinje, 1996; Blackwell, 2001), and in a few cases, such as the Foxwoods Resort and Casino of the Mashantucket Pequot tribe in Connecticut, have made tribal members wealthy (Eisler, 2001). The long-term economic benefits of Indian casinos, however, are still hotly debated within both the tribal structure and the community of academic researchers (e.g., Harvey, 1996; Mezey, 1996).

Middle-aged workers are turning to face-lifts to compete with younger colleagues in what experts say is an increasingly ageist workplace. Dr Waterhouse believes that facial ageing, which generally occurs in the 40s or 50s, can often coincide with changes of direction in life and in peoples careers. Some of his patients think that looking older means less respect in a competitive work environment. He said: “We are all going to be working longer. As we get older we all have to make sure we are presentable. Where once we would have had a haircut, we now consider surgery as a realistic option.” The Harley Medical Group reports that while face-lifts are popular with both sexes, women are also opting for brow and breast lifts and Botox treatments, while men tend to change a feature they have always been unhappy with, such as the nose. People do not want to be considered “over the hill” and ready for retirement by their colleagues before they are ready to go.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Its not that niche products dont have a broad appeal, noted Neil Donnenfeld, senior vice president of global sales and marketing for Advanced Vision Research, its just that broad audience is not yet aware of a potential solution. We have a product were marketing right now, SteriLid Eyelid Cleanser, which is a very good example of that, he said. Its the first product on the market to help treat blepharitis, a common condition that causes inflammation of the eyelids that impacts upward of 12 million people, as well as for use in both pre- and post-eye surgery. Blepharitis is a lifelong condition, and the only way to keep blepharitis from flaring is to initiate a daily eyelid cleansing routine, according to the National Eye Institute. Its a niche, Donnenfeld said, because a year into its launch SteriLid has generated $1.5 million in sales–small in comparison with other eye care products, but not so small when you consider that those are all incremental dollars. Thats the value of operating as a niche marketer, Donnenfeld said, identifying and developing products for conditions that may not have a satisfactory solution. It doesnt do the retailer any good if we just switch [the consumer] from one product to another, he said. Weve either got to deliver incremental penny profit, or we have to deliver an incremental sale.

chiropractors Arlington

New Study Confirms DCs Make Vital Contributions to Health Care In the study, the authors surveyed each of the four types of providers in two states they considered “nationally representative” of the profession being surveyed. States in the Northeast and West were chosen to “enable examination of geographic diversity.” For chiropractic, the researchers selected Arizona and Massachusetts; these states, along with Washington and Connecticut, were used for surveys of the other professions. A total of 205 DCs met the criteria for the study, and were interviewed by telephone. During the interviews, the chiropractors answered questions on a variety of subjects, including demographics; training and practice characteristics; practice workload; professional trends; and contributions to the field of health care.
My own practice was constructed as a part of the local group of health care practitioners in my community. I sought out the best primary care physicians, physical therapists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and physiatrists to associate with, and referred to them when it was clear that my form of intervention was not helping the patient. In this sense, I was an “integrative chiropractor” because I saw to it that the patients best interests were served in two ways. First, the patient received the best conservative care first (chiropractic) before moving on to procedures of greater risk. Secondly, the patient was free to talk openly with me and with the medical providers about all the practitioners involved, without fear of derision or embarrassment. No one was competing for the business of the patient; we were only working as a team for the patients welfare. My network included the chiefs of staff of local hospitals and spinal orthopedics at Stanford University Hospital, the best orthopedist for knees and shoulders, the best family practice physicians, and so on. Therefore, I could honestly say to the patient that he or she was getting the best care possible. In my interviews with the physicians, I learned as much about their residencies and practice patterns as I could. If they were the best at knees, where did they obtain that specialty? How many knees had they “done” in their residency? How did they currently fit in with the provision of health care in their community? Sometimes a less-flattering side of health care services would emerge from our conversations. Although I had achieved just a glimpse of the overall situation, it was clear I myself was not really a member of this healthcare system that had its own massive structure, credentialing and accreditation framework, hierarchy, rivalries, and troubles with a changing healthcare environment.

At odds with the current despondency surrounding the white fish industry, Highlands CorrespondentAlan Crawford finds signs of hope on the horizon for the communities tied to the sea Out of Aberdeen on the road to Peterhead a thick, salty haar descends upon the countryside, obscuring the boundary between land and sea in this northeast stronghold of Scotlands fishing fleet. But there are signs that the age-old association between the region and its fishing heritage may be adrift. Incomes are falling and recruits to the industry are at such a low level that it is difficult to get crew. After much hand wringing over European Commission cuts imposed in February on the number of days whitefish trawlers can spend at sea, 177 boat owners have applied to decommission their vessels. Last week European fisheries Commissioner Franz Fischler announced his plans for an extension of the cod recovery scheme in the North Sea for up to 10 years, signalling many more years of restrictions on Scottish boats fishing efforts.
Fishing is one of the branches that contribute very little to the total economic activity in Slovenia. In 2006 the value added in the fishing sector totalled EUR 4.3 m, which corresponds to 0.02% of the economys total value added. According to the labour force survey, the industry employed 245 persons. Another 208 workers were employed in processing fish products. Both figures together represent a 0.05% share of all employed persons. The activity is most prominent in the Obalno-kraska region. The decline was the result of a smaller marine catch and farming. The marine catch and farming amounted to 1,126 tonnes (9.8% less than a year ago). Within that, 933 tonnes of animals were caught (down 8.6% from 2005), while 193 tonnes were farmed (down 15.0%). The total quantity of fish obtained from the sea declined; the quantity of molluscs dropped even more. The latter increased rapidly in previous years and accounted for 23.4% of all aquatic animals caught or farmed in the sea in 2005, but its share contracted to 20.0% in 2006. The quantity of aquatic animals bred in fresh waters totalled 1,174 tonnes (up 4.8% from 2005). This equalled 51% of total catch and farming of aquatic animals (47% in 2005, 9% in 1990). This share has been increasing with the expansion of freshwater breeding and, more importantly, the decline in the sea catch. Slovenia has many high-quality fresh water sources, and therefore ample possibilities for further expansion of fish farming The total quantity of aquatic animals has also been declining in the EU-25 on average. In 2005 EU countries caught and farmed 15% fewer aquatic animals than in 2000, while the decrease in Slovenia was 9%. Cyprus and Denmark recorded the largest drops (94% and 40%). Decreases were also registered in the neighbouring Austria and Italy (by 15% and 8%). On the other hand, some countries posted relatively high gains, e.g. Lithuania (75%), Germany (22%) and Hungary (6%). Croatia also enjoyed a high increase (by 75%; see graph).

High school golfers have a disadvantage that every other high school athlete does not have. They dont have a home court or home field where they can hone their skills and get better. If they want to improve during the off- season, most have to fend for themselves and find, and pay, for a place to practice and play. A golfer, on the other hand, has to make a tee time on a golf course, then pay to play. If they want to hit some practice balls, they have to dish out the cash. Range balls dont come cheap these days.

November 28, 2005 Thanks for the warm welcome. Its really good to be here. Im here because I strongly believe Jon Kyl needs to be reelected to the United States Senate. And I appreciate you supporting him. I particularly want to thank the organizers of this event. Its a big event, by the way. [Laughter] Thanks for working over Thanksgiving to make this such a successful show of support for Jon Kyl, but it wouldnt be successful if it wasnt for the nature of the man that youre supporting. Youve seen him. You know him. You know he loves the people of Arizona.

As your new president, I face a challenging task when it comes to speaking to you about school finance. Let me give you my dilemma. It is the end of the school year as I write this piece and I am reflecting on the uncertain state of school finances in coming months and what these financial challenges mean for us as school system leaders. You will share my frustration that as many as half the nations students may be directly shortchanged of the education they deserve, with the remainder not immune to the impact of belt tightening. As bad as that news is, last year at this time NCSL found 36 states with budget gaps. On the other hand, NCLB and IDEA could be funded retroactively, which would help make up for last years budget shortfalls that resulted from unfunded or underfunded mandates. If you are a school leader in one of the rare districts whose state legislature decided this summer to support quality education with adequate funding for all your schools, the future must look bright, so you can skip the remainder of this column. If youre not in that sunny camp, please continue and let me share my thoughts.

Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”

Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.

Looking at freight transport, there was a significant increase in maritime and railway transport, while the volume of road transport remained roughly at the level from last years second quarter. After the volume of maritime transport fell by a fifth in the first quarter, it rose by 14.5% in the second quarter of 2007, year on year. The volume of transport has become more volatile in recent years, but the volume of goods carried has not contracted significantly relative to the global conjuncture witnessed in the industry in 2005. Maritime transport is one of the minor transport modes in Slovenia. Railway freight transport grew by 14.9% in the first quarter and continued to grow strongly in the second quarter. Harbour transport recorded a modest increase, while road freight transport did not increase in year-on-year terms in the second quarter, partly because of the very high volume of road transport seen in the second quarter of 2006. Data also show that the expansion in this mode of transport, boosted by the abolition of restrictions upon Slovenias accession to the EU, has moderated somewhat this year Slovenia is near the top among EU countries according to the volume of road freight transport per capita. The assessment refers to the volume of freight transport expressed in tonne kilometres, undertaken by freight vehicles registered in a given country. It measures carriage by domestic freight vehicles in the country of registration and abroad, and not the volume of transport within the territory of a given country. In 2006 by far the most per capita road shipments were performed by carriers registered in Luxembourg (18,766 tkm; see graph). Slovenian carriers (with three times lower freight transport per capita) were ranked second and performed 58.9% more transport than the average carrier in the EU. The high intensity of road freight transport in Slovenia is the result of the surging growth rates of road transport, particularly in 2004 and 2005 (27.9% and 22.5%). From the second quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2007, the volume of shipments carried by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia increased by 53.8%. Domestic transport rose by 23.9%, while international transport climbed by as much as 63.8%. Within international transport, the largest (3.2-fold) increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country). The well-developed shipping industry in Slovenia is attributable to Slovenias favourable position at the crossing of European corridors V and X. Transport on these corridors is increasing, and Slovenian carriers are exploiting new business opportunities. With Slovenias entry into the EU, a number of administrative barriers for carriage within the EU were removed for Slovenian carriers (especially the procurement of a limited number of licences). Slovenia also negotiated the possibility to perform cabotage in the EU-15 countries, which the Eastern European countries that joined the EU together with Slovenia will only be allowed to do after the end of a five-year period.
In the final quarter of 2007, passenger transport saw the largest increase in air transport and the largest decline in city bus transport. Within land passenger transport, the declining trend of bus transport continued. The annual decline in the number of passengers in intercity and city bus transport (-3.9% and -3.5%, respectively) was also similar to the average annual decrease in the last three years (5.9% and 3.3%, respectively). The volume of railway passenger transport in the final quarter of 2007 did not strengthen significantly year on year; the 2.4% growth recorded in 2007 was also only slightly above the three-year average (2.1%). Air transport and airport transport posted vigorous growth in the final quarter of last year (27.6% and 19.6% year on year, respectively). The increases in 2007 (13.7% and 13.3%, respectively) were also somewhat greater relative to the average annual rises in the last few years. In air transport, this also enabled an increase in aircraft fleet (lease of one and purchase of two new aircrafts) and in airport transport, the completion of the first phase of the new passenger terminal and arrival of two new airline companies, which started to fly regularly from Ljubljanas airport last year. Within freight transport, road transport has increased significantly, whereas maritime freight transport is still decreasing slightly, following the boom recorded in this branch two years before. In the final quarter last year, the volume of freight transport by rail decreased by 3.7% relative to the same quarter of 2006, whereas 2007 as a whole saw a solid 6.8% growth, which exceeded the average growth in the last three years (4.6%). Road freight transport strengthened by as much as 19.1% in the final quarter of 2007; the high 13.4% annual growth nevertheless fell short of the annual average of the last three years by almost 2.p.p. Against the background of favourable international trends, maritime freight transport increased by a respective 30.6% and 41.8% in 2004 and 2005, whereas it dropped by a respective 6.4% and 5.2% in 2006 and 2007. The fall in the volume of maritime transport in the final quarter last year (-8.7%) indicates that the slowdown continues. Harbour freight transport in the final quarter and in 2007 as a whole recorded only a slight increase, particularly compared to the high 22.5% growth in 2006 (average annual growth in the last three years totalled 9.5%). Road freight transport by domestic carriers recorded a much stronger increase than railway freight transport over the last few years, largely due to the increasing international transport (see graph). The volume of road freight transport (in tonne kilometres - tkm), which was almost as much as three times greater than railway transport in 2004, increased by 4,728 million tkm until 2007 (by 52.5%), whereas railway transport increased only by 454 million tkm (by 14.4%). In three years, road freight transport became almost four times greater than railway transport; the share of road transport within freight transport rose to 79.2%. Road transport growth strengthened particularly after Slovenias accession to the EU and mainly through increased international transport (see SEM 1/2008: 14). The largest increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage, by 2,161 million tkm (by 155.2%). International transport of goods loaded in Slovenia increased by 1,323 million tkm (by 49.4%) and international transport of goods unloaded in Slovenia by 937 million tkm (by 35.1%). National road transport in Slovenia increased by a mere 306 million tkm (by 13.5%).

CameraFrom the simplest amateur camera to the most complex, professional piece of equipment, all cameras have five common parts. The lens is made of glass or plastic (or groups of glass elements) and focuses light passing through it on the film to reproduce an image. The diaphragm is an opening or aperture that controls the amount of light entering the camera from the lens and so limits the films exposure to light. The diaphragm ranges in complexity from a fixed lens, opening in a simple camera, to apertures that can be adjusted manually or automatically.

Radio continues to be an inexpensive way for dealers and suppliers to reach their increasingly mobile customers Last year, the Minnesota-Dakota Hardware Association used $130,000 in co-op funds provided by five companies — Ace Hardware, United Hardware Distributors, TruServ, Briggs Stratton and 3M — for a five-month-long radio campaign extolling the virtues of the independent dealer over its warehouse competitors. Radio, which traces its roots back to the 1870s when it served as a point-to-point wireless telegraph, has survived several technology revolutions and continues to provide a reliable venue for dealers promotional efforts. Its relatively low cost and access to people while they are mobile are making radio a preferred and efficient medium for more companies. At least one study has even found that online dealers, with their cutting-edge approach to marketing and selling, are using radio ambitiously to get their messages out to shoppers.

The pin-hole camera picks up the man knocking on the door of a council flat. The fuzzy edge of the circular image lends a covert feel to the scene, which is being taped for use as evidence. The on-screen time stamp ticks over as the bearded man bends to call through the letter- box. A moment later a man opens the door and ushers in the visitor. Is this a buyer visiting his drug dealer? Or just one friend calling on another? The time-lapse video monitors the flat 24 hours a day. A neighbour has complained of slamming doors at all times of the day and night. The council has to check the allegation and gather evidence to use in court, if necessary. The complainant is too scared to testify against the tenants, so the council is using private detectives to search for information. Phil works for Burgess PDQ, a detective agency that his father, Steve, runs from a three-room office suite near Manchesters main shopping area. The agencys first taste of council work came 18 months ago when Salford wanted to gather information on a nuisance case. Since then the agency has investigated cases involving drugs, noise, harassment and car crime.

House Values
September 22nd, 2008
Prosperity in the U.S. construction industry was again on the house, as the residential segment continues to exhibit most of the recent growth in the domestic building industry. The construction industry appears to be hovering at a level close to last years pace, says Robert A. Murray, vice president of economic affairs for McGraw-Hill Construction. Housing remains very healthy, and the upturn for non-residential building in February was a welcome development after a sluggish January. Murray says that higher steel prices could be putting a crimp in the nonresidential segments. Over the course of 2004, its expected that nonresidential building will see a modest strengthening trend. Admittedly, though, this years sharp increase in steel prices has made the nonresidential upturn less certain, given the impact that higher costs and materials shortages may have on individual construction projects. At this juncture, it appears that the nonresidential upturn will be dampened but not derailed, assuming steel prices settle back by midyear, but the situation clearly bears watching.

concrete franchises
September 22nd, 2008
Franchising Hiring is one of the most important–and difficult–jobs a manager has to do, especially as the legal system increasingly intrudes into personnel decisions. Employment service franchises that help relieve that pressure on management by taking over the hiring process for a fee are growing handsomely, along with the personnel placement industry as a whole.
FRANCHISINGHistorically, franchising was a grant by a king to allow a citizen an exclusive right to sell a product or render a service. For this right, the sovereign protected the exclusivity and the subject paid the government an appropriate tribute in service, food, goods, or money. Franchising in the United States started shortly after the Civil War (1861#x2013;1865), when the Singer Company began to set up sewing-machine franchises. The concept became increasingly popular after 1900 in the automobile industry. Because of this, other automotive franchises developed for gasoline, oil, and tires. In the 1950s, food operations made a dramatic entrance into franchising with the development of McDonalds, currently one of the worlds largest franchise organizations.Franchising operations account for billions of dollars in annual sales, with more than 500 outlets employing millions of people. A new franchise opens somewhere in the United States every six minutes. Franchising accounts for approximately 40 percent of all U.S. retail sales. Because of changes in the international marketplace, shifting employment options in the United States, the expanding U.S. economy, and corporate interest in more joint-venture activity, franchising will continue to increase rapidly.
Franchising The videocassette rental industry did not exist before 1978, when a company called Video Station opened a small store in California. Says Robert Moffett, who once worked for the company: The first year they had net profit of $98,000, so you knew there was franchise potential. The eight-year boom has been fueled by the runaway market for home video-cassette recorders, which enabled people to see movies when they wanted, in their own homes. Figures are hard to come by–as Byron W. Boothe, chairman of Popingo, Inc., Wichita, Kans., one of the larger video franchise chains, says, One of the things about a new industry is its hard to get your arms around statistics — but various industry estimates put the number of VCR households in the United States at 30 percent.

CATEGORY REVIEW * The freezer case is getting a little more crowded as consumers become acquainted with gelato and frozen custard. Amazingly, grocers are finding themselves having to make room in their freezer cases once again, as a new trend emerges in frozen desserts. Not surprisingly, it reflects consumers growing penchant for rich, decadent, full-flavor offerings. This time around, the products themselves - gelato and frozen custard - arent necessarily new. On the contrary, theyve been foodservice favorites in select regions for years. For the most part, however, the mainstream American consumer hasnt been exposed to them, particularly at retail.
The plant includes a process freezer, tempering cooler for further processing, a USDA production cooler, and room for more than 8,000 pallet positions. The project is scheduled to be completed in January 2008.

Internet Marketing Business
September 22nd, 2008
Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet! Do you wonder why e-commerce, which is a direct result of Internet marketing, is experiencing explosive growth?
At the beginning of this century, a new advertising industry came of age in the United States. Now, at the turn of the twenty-first century, new global media and audiences are reshaping this industry and the advertising we see. The next frontier is worldwide, and the new media are as open-ended as cyberspace. The tremendous growth of the Internet as an advertising medium has been widely documented in a variety of published articles and reports. Although advertisers still invest more than 45 percent of their media budget in newspaper and television, the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) estimates that more than $900 million was spent on Internet advertising in 1997 and projects that the end-of-year figures for 1998 will show an expenditure of at least $2 billion. Business Week predicts that ad spending on the Internet will be close to $8 billion by 2002.1 One important reason why revenue is increasing at such a rapid rate is that many ol the more established and popular Web sites are charging more for their ads. In general, advertisers pay for their ads on a “cost per thousand” (CPM) basis, i.e., advertisers pay a fee for every thousand times their ad is viewed. CPM rates for television range from $5 to $6 per thousand. Compare this tc Web site charges: the average cost for banner ads is $17, but more popular sites can charge a premium of $20 to $22 per thousand for access to their visitors. Advertisers pay more for Internet ads because these sites can deliver a more targeted audience.

Me, Myself, My Team - How to become an effective team player using NLP By Angus McLeod Publisher: Crown House ISBN: 1899836381 The book seeks to explain what turns a good team into a great team and is intended to provide the reader with effective strategies to improve your teams communication and motivation, discover new perceptions and begin new courses of action. Founded on the belief that openness and flexibility are the keys to personal effectiveness, it promotes the need for real empowerment of each team member. The book costs £12.99, which does seem to me to be expensive for 127 pages and is not a book I myself would buy. The book is repetitive of much information that is available in many other books; after all most Management Services Practitioners would be well aware that big goals need to be broken down into smaller goals without reading about this in the book.
BRANCH EVENT David Pratt, managing director and founder of consultancy Redcap Associates, will explain that “Life is one big negotiation” when he speaks at next months Beds and Herts branch event. Pratt will reveal what it is about gifted communicators that makes them effective.

MARTIN CARRUTHERS injury-time winner wasnt enough to squeeze Scunthorpe into the play-off zone. Scunthorpe pressed hard, forcing ten corners in the second-half. At the last of these, taken by skipper Peter Beagrie two minutes into stoppage time, Carruthers rose above the York defence to head home at the far post.
